Use Ecosia on your desktop
Making Ecosia your default search engine on desktop can be done in just a few steps, but how you do this depends on the type of browser you use. This article provides instructions on how to use Ecosia on commonly used desktop browsers.

Use Ecosia in Chrome
Make Ecosia your default search engine
The default search engine setting determines the search engine in the main address bar. To make Ecosia your default search engine in Chrome, follow these steps:
- Open Settings within Chrome - If you are using a mac you can also find Chrome’s settings by clicking on Preferences
- Go to search engine and select Ecosia as your default search engine
Please note that Chrome only shows you the top 5 most popular search engines in your market at the moment. As a result, Ecosia may not appear. In that case, you may consult our manual procedure as described below. Alternatively, you will find how to set Ecosia as your homepage at the end of the Chrome section. Be assured that we are always fighting to be in the top 5!

Add Ecosia as your search engine
Adding Ecosia in this way does not give you the Ecosia New Tab Page. But we're working on a solution! Find out more here.
- Visit ecosia.org, Ecosia will be added to your Inactive shortcuts in your settings
- Open Settings within Chrome - If you are on a Mac you can also find Chrome’s settings by clicking on Preferences
- Select Search Engine and open Manage search engine and site search
- Navigate to Inactive shortcuts and activate Ecosia
- Navigate to Site Search
- Make Ecosia your default search engine by clicking the dots on the right and select Make default
In case you do not see Ecosia listed as a default option, you can manually add Ecosia as your search engine instead. Simply follow these steps:
- Open Settings within Chrome - If you are on a Mac you can also find Chrome’s settings by clicking on Preferences
- Select Search Engine and open Manage search engine and site search - If you have visited ecosia.org before you can find Ecosia in your “Inactive shortcuts” list, you can activate it (jump to step 4) or add Ecosia manually
- If you add Ecosia manually enter the following details into the popup
a. Search engine: Ecosia
b. Shortcut: ecosia.org
c. URL with %s in place of query: https://www.ecosia.org/search?q=%s&addon=manualopensearch
- Make Ecosia your default search engine by clicking the dots on the right and selecting Make default

Use Ecosia in Edge
The default search engine setting determines the search engine in the main address bar. To make Ecosia your default search engine in Edge, follow these steps:
- Open Settings in Edge - If you are using a mac you can also find Edge’s settings by clicking on Preferences
- Select Privacy and Services in the left sidebar
- Scroll down to Services
- Click on Address bar and search and select Ecosia - Alternatively, if Ecosia is not available in your region in Edge you can still add Ecosia as your default search by following the next steps.
- Click on Manage search engines and then click on Add
- Add the following into the popup and then select Ecosia as your default
a. Search engine: Ecosia
b. Shortcut: ecosia.org
c. URL with %s in place of query: https://www.ecosia.org/search?q=%s

Use Ecosia in Firefox

- Scroll down to Default Search Engine and select Ecosia
For some regions, Ecosia is not available in Firefox settings, you can still add Ecosia manually by setting it as your homepage.

- Select search engines on the left side and select Ecosia as your default

- Click On Start up and click Open a specific page or set of pages
- To set Ecosia as your homepage add https://www.ecosia.org and confirm with a click on Add.
Use Ecosia in Vivaldi
The default search engine setting determines the search engine in the main address bar. To make Ecosia your default search engine in Vivaldi, follow these steps:
- Open your browser
- Click on the magnifying glass in the right field
- Select Ecosia as your default search engine

Use Ecosia in Opera
Making Ecosia your default search engine in Opera is currently not possible. We recommend setting Ecosia as hompage in this browser. Follow these steps:
- Open Settings within the browser on the left side - If you are on a mac you can also find Chrome’s settings by clicking on Preferences
- Scroll to On start up and Click the third option Add a new page
- Add https://www.ecosia.org and confirm by clicking on Add.
