How does Ecosia use profits from ad income to finance tree planting?

Like any other search engine, Ecosia earns money from clicks on the advertisements that appear alongside the search results.

The advertisements on Ecosia are clearly labeled as Ads and are text links to websites (i.e. businesses), which pay for each click by users. The ads are delivered to you by our partner Microsoft Advertising, who pays Ecosia a share of the revenue generated via these ads.

Ecosia earns a few cents for every click on an ad from Microsoft – or a portion of the purchase price made through an affiliate link. Ecosia gives 100% of the profits from this ad revenue to climate action, with 80% used to finance planting and protecting trees in more than 30 countries around the world.

How do Microsoft Ads on Ecosia protect your privacy?

Microsoft provides Ecosia with a solution that delivers advertisements relevant to your search query while protecting your privacy.

When you click on an ad on Ecosia which is provided by Microsoft Advertising, your ad-click behaviour is not associated with a user profile. This means your clicks cannot be used to target ads to you either on Ecosia or elsewhere on the Internet. Microsoft does not store or share any information other than for accounting purposes.
